You have successfully identified which of those parts is a truck spark plug, the next question is do you have an idea of how it really works?

An impeccably running vehicle engine needs two things to keep going — the correct ratio of air and fuel, and a spark to ignite the air/fuel mixture.

Basically, a spark plug ignites the air and fuel mixture, and conveys heat from the combustion chamber.

Electrical current passes through the truck spark plugs’ main electrode from a generating source such as a battery or an alternator. 

A truck spark plug basically works as a heat exchanger by removing unwanted thermal energy away from the combustion chamber then transfers the heat to the engine’s cooling system. Remember that the spark plug does not create heat.

The time that it takes to transfer heat is determined by the extent of the insulator nose, the gas volume around the insulator nose, and the materials that comprise the porcelain insulator and the centre electrode.

After the ignition is triggered, the spark travels through the rotor, to the cap, down the wire, and jumps the gap of the spark plug. In the combustion chamber, a spark kernel is created that ignites the air/fuel mixture.

Ever wondered why vehicle experts claim that one way to save on fuel is to keep that spark plug clean? A spark plug that is dirty ends up using too much air and/or fuel that eventually takes a big strain on the amount of fuel used to start the vehicle.

A spark plug with debris build-up will not fire up causing it to short out and not produce a spark. Make it a habit to clean your vehicle’s spark plug every six months and you will be happier with how it functions.
